POTENTIAL MAJOR SOLAR FLARE WARNING
Solar Terrestrial Dispatch
www.spacew.com
Active sunspot complex 1429 will be crossing the central solar meridian on
9 March. It is now entering a sensitive position in terms of its ability to
launch Earthward-directed coronal mass ejections.
Fairly significant levels of transverse magnetic shear are being detected
along an east-west oriented inversion line that crosses through the
central portion of the spot complex. We expect this to result in frequent
M-class flare production as well as possible occasional strong X-class
solar flares. The potential exists for attendant strong coronal mass
ejections. There are strong suspicions and some supporting evidence that
the last major X-class flare from this region (which occurred as it was
crossing the limb a few days ago) was a proton flare. Additional strong
X-class proton flares could produce prompt space radiation events in the
near-Earth space environment. These events pose no significant threat to
human activities at ground-level on the Earth, but may require some level
of caution for astronauts in orbit.
This active region may remain capable of producing major levels of
activity until it transits the western solar limb in approximately 10
days.
